In my belly dancing lessons I often refer to the seven main chakras. I teach my students how to align them with specific belly dancing movements and exercises in order to release blockages in the chakras that prevent their movements from flowing naturally and thus clear limitations in their artistic expression.
Since I have often been asked to explain what chakras are and where they are located, I have created the following introduction for students who are not familiar with the terms.
The word “chakra” is Sanskrit and means wheel or disk. According to traditional Indian medicine, the chakras are considered the focal points for the reception and transmission of energy in the human body. Each chakra point governs a certain area of the body and influences the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual state of a person.
